"A Jubilee Economy? What's That?" I Was Asked

Updated on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at 10:44AM by Registered CommenterWebmaster

The questioner was interested in a different economy, but “jubilee” did not connect with anything in his experience of economies. So, I said that it was a sustainable economy, an ecologically friendly economy—one that fit our planet. The global, capital-driven economy, I explained to him, required multiple planets even though we have only one. So it’s essential that we shift to an economy that can fit inside of Earth and restore her. A jubilee economy is a one-Earth economy. That made sense to the questioner.

    iCall, YouJEM

Get it? I call you JEM. He-he-hee! Okay, so I am crash-banging Apple (iEverything) and Google (YouTube) worlds in the title. And I realize neither of those operate at the scale that JEM suggests of other operators. But let’s face it. There is some brain power to address stuff we haven’t even thought of, so let’s put it to some use, as long as people are wired as much as they are now.

Look Out Justin Bieber! JEM is on YouTube!

Yesterday Lee Van Ham was interviewed by T.C. Porter of Adams Avenue Crossing, a unique dirt-under-the-fingernails ministry effort in the Normal Heights neighborhood of San Diego (where the JEM office is located). Lee addresses a number of questions that help introduce the historical/theological background of the Jubilee economics model, and considers what embracing jubilee means for the disciple who is called to live according to this model that stands in contrast to the model used by the superpowers and empires of the world.

So look out Justin Bieber! Lee might be the next YouTube star with all the videos popping up lately on YouTube. Have you seen the JEM channel, JubEcoMin? It is our YouTube channel featuring our own uploads, and footage from allied groups on a similar path. Lee is guest preaching for four weeks at the African-American congregation at Southeast Presbyterian Church in San Diego. We’ll get as much of that footage as we can. You can find the first week’s sermon among our uploads on the YouTube channel.
