Trick or Treat? Fair or Free?

Okay, this is a harebrained idea, but since Halloween is the best day for the exchanging of chocolate treats, and since October is Fair Trade Month, maybe we can link the two?

I don’t really like to do the Halloween candy giveaway thing perhaps because I just have some aversion to Halloween with untold people marching up my steps. Call me antisocial that way. But maybe this year I will bear with the parade of oddly dressed folks and give out some sort of blurb card that urges people to seek out Fair Trade chocolates and treats instead of the brand name stuff that adheres to the “old model.” Some would regard it as a trick, I guess, a disappointing walk up to the wrong porch, but who knows… maybe some of the parents might be intrigued and take up the FT cause in their subsequent buying?

I suppose indiscriminately giving out Fair Trade goods could run into some money for the giver, but not so with some type of awareness handout!

On November 1, our podcast will appear featuring David Funkhouser of Fair Trade USA. We recorded it on the first of October while he was in town speaking at three universities. It is quite good, so subscribe to our RSS feed now so you don’t miss it.
